Fall Maintenance Tips – Prepare Your Home For Winter

Fall is the perfect season to do minor upkeeps to your home. The weather is just right, making it comfortable to move around and clean.

The best part about fall maintenance is that you do not have to drastically change everything – unlike during spring cleaning. You can forget about calling a professional to do the upkeep, most of the tasks listed below are relatively easy to do.

This way you get to clean your house according to your tastes and save a few bucks along the way. Here are some fall maintenance tips you don’t want to miss:

Clean the gutters and downspouts

You can clean the gutters and downspouts on your home regularly. Remove all leaves and debris to make sure that the drainage areas are unclogged. While you’re at it, consider installing gutter guards, too. It makes the job a lot easier.

Remember, your roof’s drainage system is responsible for diverting thousands of gallons of water from your house’s exterior every year. It is very crucial to keep it flowing smoothly.

Otherwise, clogged gutters can damage exterior surfaces in the long run. It can also cause floods in your basement.

Look for Peeling Paint                                                                                                                                                              Fall is also a good time to paint your walls. The humidity is lower, and the temperature is just right – not too hot, not too cold. Check your exterior walls for any peeling or blistering paint.

Peeling paint is a tell-tale sign that the existing paint film is failing. This means it cannot protect the siding of your walls any longer. It is essential to fix this right away, or it can lead to expensive repairs in the future.

Inspect your roof

Check your roof for any wear and tear. Inspect it from top to bottom. See if the shingles are curling or crackling. If so, replace them right away.

Also look for damage to metal flashing in valleys and around vents and chimneys. It is important to get any issues fixed this fall before the ice and winter winds make matters worse.

Organize your pantry

Check your pantry to see if there are packaged items that were untouched all year long. This is a great time to look at what you need to throw out. Get more tips on organizing your pantry here .

Check your exterior pipes

This is one of the most critical parts of Fall Maintenance. Make sure you prevent your exterior water pipes from bursting during winter. You can do this by turning off the valves to the exterior hose bibs. Next, you need to run the water until the pipes are empty. By draining the water from the pipes, the water will not freeze. This means there will be less chance of damaging the pipes.

Clean your lawn

Fall is one of the most beautiful seasons. All those leaves are falling, the gorgeous color combinations, everything is just picture perfect. During the fall, you can start doing some upkeep on your garden or lawn. Consider using lawn aerators – these are very useful in growing a healthier, livelier lawn.

Inspect your furnace

Okay – so maybe you will need to hire a professional for this step. However, hiring somebody once a year to check your heating system is a significant step. This will also save you some money for the future.

Early telltale signs that you should have your furnace checked are noisy belts, erratic behavior, and poor performance. Keep in mind that a lot of people are also doing this step this fall. Make sure you schedule this task early and long before the heating season begins.
